What is Sciatica?

man with sciatica painSCIATICA is nerve pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the widest and longest nerve in the human body. Some people experience sharp, intense pain, and others get tingling, weakness, and numbness in their legs. Constant pain in one side that originates in the lower back or buttock and continues to the leg, is the main symptom.

What causes it?

Sciatica occurs when something in your body compresses your sciatic nerve.
Causes could be from:

  • Disc herniations
  • Bone spurs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spinal misalignments
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Diabetes
  • Tumors
  • Piriformis syndrome

How can chiropractic help?

After a full examination, chiropractors use techniques to help restore proper alignment to the spine, relieving pressure on your nervous system. The correction of misalignments (subluxations) in your spine provide relief of sciatic pain.
Research has shown the effectiveness of chiropractic care on sciatica, with patients reporting greater relief of pain, a quicker return to work, and fewer drugs needed compared to those going without chiropractic.
